Made From Native Recycled Trees and Shrubs 100% Organic Material Retains Soil Moisture Contains Mycorrhizal Fungi Use Instead of Canadian Sphagnum Peat Does Not Compact Kid and Pet Friendly In Nature, nothing is wasted. Leaves and limbs fall and plants die each season. All of this material becomes food for soil microorganisms that cause it to decompose. This is humus. It is not soil but a rich brown to black material formed as plant material breaks down into natural organic matter. It allows water and air to penetrate the soil surface and helps the top soil layer hold moisture. This organic matter is full of living organisms and humic acids that allow lawns and gardens to grow and thrive. Nature’s Creation® Organic Compost with Mycorrhizal Fungi is made from Native Recycled Trees and Shrubs. They are ground and manure is added to hasten the natural conversion to humus. Composting is an aerobic method (meaning it requires the presence of air) of decomposing organic matter. During this process, heat is generated sterilizing the blend. No chemicals or other materials are added. Use Nature’s Creation® Organic Compost with Mycorrhizal Fungi in fall and spring as a top dressing for the lawn, to enrich garden soil, to mulch around trees and shrubs, to loosen clay soils and improve moisture holding capacity of sandy soils. Nature’s Creation® Organic Compost with Mycorrhizal Fungi is the perfect replacement for Canadian sphagnum peat. Benefits of Mycorrhizal Fungi Mycorrhizal Fungi exist in symbiotic relationship with plant roots. Mycorrhizal literally means fungus root. Nature’s Creation® Organic Compost with Mycorrhizal Fungi contains 11 different strains of the genera Glomus, Rhizopogon, Pisolithus and Scleroderma. Mycorrhizae are divided into two basic classes, Endo and Ecto. The Endomycorrhizae actually penetrate roots to help capture nutrients and micronutrients from the soil. Ectomycorrhizae work mainly with woody plants forming what is commonly known as the Wood Wide Web. Both types benefit the host plants by increasing drought tolerance, water and nutrient uptake and disease resistance. - [Fuyu Persimmon](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/fuyu-persimmon/) - Diospyros kaki ‘Fuyu’ - Deciduous tree from China - Firm flesh has a sweet, rich taste - Self-fruitful; seedless unless planted near other varieties - Head back new growth by 1/2 each winter Fruit trees have a reputation for being tricky to grow, requiring advanced pruning techniques and strict spraying schedules. Not so for Asian persimmons! Not only does it produce a delicious orange fruit that can be eaten either crisp or fully ripe, this is just a beautiful tree, with an elegant, slightly weeping habit, white bark with beautiful texture, gorgeous fall color, and bright orange fruits that stay on the tree after the foliage drops. We habe one planted in our Food Forest that we're very excited to watch mature! Freestone. Harvest in June. - Large, sweet with yellow flesh, Juicy & melts in your mouth! - Self-fertile. Heavy producer! - Blooms resist frost well! This is our best-selling peach variety because it's delicious, with sweet, melting flesh and freestone when fully ripe. We have one planted in the food forest by the street and we can't wait to eat them! Peach trees are self-fertile and do beautifully in central Texas, but they do require that you take care to provide lots of organic matter in spring and fall for a long lived, well-producing plant. Prune to a vase shape for maximum air circulation, sunshine to ripen your peaches, and fruits that you can reach up and pick easily. 450 chill hours. Full-sized trees can be so productive that you won't even mind sharing the fruits on top with the birds. Since figs don't ripen at all after harvest, make sure they're fully ripe when you pick them! Rumor has it that some growers know it is time to pick figs when their dogs start trying to eat them. Self-fertile - Keep three main trunks; remove suckers Pomegranates are another fruit that is easy to grow and well adapted to our Central Texas climate, and this is probably the most widely grown pomegranate variety due to its big fruits. Pomegranates need excellent drainage and don't mind hot, dry weather, making them an easy choice for any edible garden in our region. The flowers are beautiful, and the fruits look like ornaments hanging from this small, densely growing tree. This versatile apple has stuck around for over 150 years for many good reasons: it's a delicious tart apple eaten fresh, but its texture when cooked is where it really shines, never getting mushy in cooked applications like pies and crumbles. Granny Smith is a great apple for central Texas because it needs a long season to ripen and holds up well in the heat. This apple should ripen in early fall in Central Texas, about 170 to 180 days after blooming. 400 chill hours. But apple growing connoseiurs agree: a home grown Gala apple, ripened on the tree and picked and eaten fresh, is an entirely different creature: far more flavorful, with aromatic qualities similar to a pear. Gala is a relatively low-chill apple that does really well in Central Texas, and will usually ripen in late summer, after Fuji. We have one planted in our food forest, and we can't wait to try it. 500-600 chill hours. Do you lie awake at night trying to figure out what makes Hill Country Water Gardens tick? Have you talked to Nathan before and thought, "man, that guy was weird. How does his brain operate?" Well, we don't have ALL of those answers, but we can certainly give you a guided tour of our grounds and answer all of your burning questions about our plants! Our flower beds are an ever-evolving beast that must be tamed from time to time. The nursery team has been hard at work for the past few months, removing old and overaggressive species, planting hundreds of new plants, and expanding and creating new flower beds! You'll see some established beauties that define the front of our store, such as our Desert Willow, Turk's Cap, or Pride of Barbados. As well as see our progress on Linden's new native bed, or Richard's revitalized herb garden. Nursery manager and assistant GM Nathan Unclebach will be leading this plant walkthrough on October 4th at 10 a.m. Walk alongside him and absorb his decades of cool and weird plant knowledge. Typically grown in multi-trunk tree form, the Anacacho Orchid is an incredibly drought-tolerant specimen that will thrive in our rocky limestone soils. The silver-gray bark is adorned with abundant white blooms in the spring which resemble orchid blooms! The blooms are a great nectar source for bees and butterflies. Give this one really good drainage and extra protection from the cold. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 12'-15' Width: 6'-10' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Texas Redbud](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/texas-redbud/) - Cercis canadensis var. texensis - Local native deciduous tree from Central Texas to OK - Bright purplish pink flowers cover bare branches in spring - Glossy, heart-shaped green leaves turn yellow in fall What a beautiful signifier that spring is here! This ornamental native tree has a very nice branch structure that stands on its own throughout the winter months, but it truly shines right at the beginning of spring. Clusters of fuchsia blooms adorn the bare branches right at the start of spring to let us know that it's time to get back in the garden! Its glossy, dark green, heart-shaped leaves arrive shortly after the blooms are finished. They will then turn a (very underrated in my opinion) nice golden yellow before they drop in the fall. Find a nice little spot in your yard for this beauty! Light: Full sun to shade Height: 10'-20' Width: 15'-25' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Pink / Gulf Muhly Grass](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/pink-gulf-muhly-grass/) - Muhlenbergia capillaris - Native deciduous grass from South Texas to Massachusetts - Airy clouds of pink flowers bloom in late summer and fall - Beautiful backlit by the sun - Cut back to 6” on March 1st An absolutely stunning native grass that should be in every landscape in central Texas. Naturally found in thin, rocky, or clay soils so will easily grow in our terrible soil. Virtually no insect or disease problems and deer resistant as well. After most of our landscapes have puttered out for the year this beauty shines in the fall to give our yards year-round interest. Looks nice planted as an individual specimen, but really shines in mass plantings. Loquats also make a fast-growing evergreen screen, perfect for a protected spot but also recovering quickly when frozen to the ground if they're well-established. A great addition to any food forest, tropical-inspired garden, formal garden, or shade garden that needs a big evergreen shrub with beautiful, fragrant flowers and fruit. A great variety for Central Texas because it will have the best possible flavor if it ripens in warm weather. 350-400 chill hours. Light: Full sun Height: 20' Width: 25' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Champanel Grape](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/champanel-grape/) - Vitus lambrusca - Deciduous grape vine - Clusters of large tart black grapes - Hardy, drought and disease resistant - Developed in Texas Closely related to Concord grapes, mature clusters of grapes are also large, beautiful, and dark, with a similar flavor profile. Light: Full sun Height: 12' Width: 12' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Improved Meyer Lemon](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/improved-meyer-lemon/) - Citrus x meyeri ‘Improved’ - Tender evergreen tree from Asia; low-acid lemon x orange - Self-fertile; produces all year - Intensely fragrant flowers - Fertilize regularly - Happy pruned & in containers Probably resulting from a cross between a lemon and an unknown variety of orange, Meyer lemons are really special: a little bit sweet, extra fragrant, super juicy, and too thin-skinned and delicate to ship, so they aren't grown commercially and you won't find them in most grocery stores. The easiest way to get them really is to grow them yourself! We recommend growing all citrus, including Meyer lemons, in containers here in Central Texas so that you can move them to a protected location like a garage, greenhouse, or wherever they fit in your house in the event of temperatures below freezing. If you fertilize regularly (use higher nitrogen organic fertilizers like MicroLife Citrus and Ocean Harvest) and protect them from frosts, your lemon tree can produce fragrant blooms and delicious fruit year-round. Like all passionvines, this one grows quickly to cover fences and trellises. Since it hosts gulf fritillary butterflies, it is also a good addition to a butterfly garden. Light: Full sun Height: 12'-15' Width: indefinite Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Madame Rosy Trumpet Vine](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/madame-rosy-trumpet-vine/) - Campsis x tagliabuana ‘HOMR’ - Deciduous hybrid vine - Slower and more compact than typical aggressive Campsis - Large, rosy red flowers bloom over a longer time than most - Visible from a distance! This is a hybrid between our native trumpet vine and a trumpet vine with larger flowers that is native to China and Japan. It's less aggressive than most trumpet vines, and should not produce viable seeds, but will still spread via runners and can still destroy a fence, so choose the site for this plant carefully! Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 10'-15' Width: 20'-30' Hardiness Zone: 4 - [Evergreen Wisteria](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/evergreen-wisteria/) - Millettia reticulata - Vine from southern China - Deciduous in Central Texas - Shrubby, twining habit - 4-6”, upward-facing, fragrant, deep violet flower clusters bloom in summer Light: Full sun. Height: 15' Width: 3'-6' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Incense Passion Vine](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/incense-passion-vine/) - Passiflora incarnata x cincinnata ‘Incense’ - Deciduous vine with ornate flowers - Fragrant, rich purple blooms from late spring through early fall - Larval host for many butterflies - Very fast growing and heat tolerant - We grow this on our fence! Passionflowers have the coolest flowers, and this one's deep purple hue and dramatic, light colored crown is one of our favorites! Fast growing, very hardy in our zone, and a host to gulf fritillary butterflies, so you can be sure to see lots of beautiful fritillaries fluttering around and cool, spiky, punk-rock caterpillars on these vines. Rest assured: even if caterpillars fully defoliate your vines, they will bounce back and look beautiful again in no time. This is the vine covering the fence next to our water lilies and bog plants! Light: Full sun. Tolerates some shade. Height: 6'-10' Width: 10'-20' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [English Ivy](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/english-ivy/) - Hedera helix - Evergreen vine from Europe and western Asia - Spreads vigorously - Climbing aerial roots affix to walls and trees - Can be used as a groundcover - Invasive in much of the US, including Central Texas This can be a quickly spreading cover for the ground or for fences, but be warned: this plant can and will choke out other vegetation, destroy brickwork, or escape your yard and annoy your neighbors. Given these tendencies, we suggest confining it to a container and keeping a close eye on it. It also makes a great houseplant. Light: Part to full shade Height: 90' Width: indefinite Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Coral Honeysuckle](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/coral-honeysuckle/) - Lonicera sempervirens - Local native semi-evergreen vine from Central Texas to Maine - Twining habit - Coral pink flowers spring to summer - Prune as needed soon after flowering ends This is probably our staff favorite vine! Usually evergreen here in central Texas, the vine also has sweet coral pink to orange tubular flowers all spring and summer. It grows quickly, but not so aggressively that you have to worry about it ruining your fence or your house. Best of all, the tubular orange flowers attract hummingbirds and the foliage is a host plant for the Snowberry Clearwing, an adorable sphinx moth that looks kind of like a big, fat, fuzzy, golden honeybee. A beautiful screening plant that brings this much cuteness to the garden really can't be beat. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 1'-3' Width: 6'-20' Hardiness Zone: 4 - [Creeping Fig Ivy](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/creeping-fig-ivy/) - Ficus pumila - Evergreen vine from eastern Asia - Small, heart-shaped leaves - Clings to most non-metal surfaces without support - Clean-looking wall coverage - Can also be used as groundcover For that rustic, cottagecore, crumbling-ruins aesthetic. We love adding creeping fig ivy to any planting that includes rock walls or statuary to instantly age it a little bit, make it look less new and artificial and more like it has been moldering gently in place for a few hundred years before you happened to stumble upon its unique beauty. It's also much less invasive and destructive than English Ivy, which is often used for the same effect but can quickly get out of hand, with a more delicate look. We're big fans. Light: Full sun to full shade Height: 10'-15' Width: 3'-6' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Chocolate Chip Ajuga](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/chocolate-chip-ajuga/) - Ajuga x tenorii 'Valfredda' - Perennial groundcover - Light blue flower - Dark green/chocolate foliage - Very dense and low growing Our most popular ajuga! The little leaves are so cute, and the bronze coloring is striking mixed with other shade loving perennials. Like all ajuga, it is especially impressive in early spring, when it is covered in little spikes of blue flowers. Light: Part to full shade Height: 4" Width: 12"-18" Hardiness Zone: 3 - [Clematis Jackmanii Purple](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/clematis-jackmanii-purple/) - Clematis jackmanii - Deciduous perennial - Popular and reliable clematis - Perfect for fences and small arbors - Showy deep purple blooms all summer A hybrid heirloom clematis introduced in England in the 1800s, this vine is an old garden favorite. Clematis vines can be notoriously difficult to site, but the incredible show of large deep purple flowers are worth learning about what you have and what it needs! Since this hybrid clematis blooms on both old and new growth, you can choose to either prune lightly to shape right after blooming, or simply cut vines to the ground in fall or spring. All clematis vines like to have their flowering vines in some sun (morning sun preferred), and moist shade around their roots (best achieved by companion planting with shrubs and perennials to keep the ground cool and moist). Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 4'+ Width: 3'+ Hardiness Zone: 4 - [Carolina Jessamine](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/carolina-jessamine/) - Gelsemium sempervirens - Native evergreen vine from East Texas to Virginia - Prolific yellow trumpet flowers are sweetly fragrant - Blooms early through late spring - Attractive glossy green foliage A native, fast growing, evergreen screening vine that creates a dense screen fast. The yellow flowers are extremely fragrant, and will attract native bees and hummingbirds and the foliage is a host for spicebush swallowtail butterflies, making this an excellent choice for a habitat or wildlife garden. In winter, the foliage might be tinged with purple after it experiences cold temperatures. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 20' Width: 3' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Catlin's Giant Ajuga](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/catlins-giant-ajuga/) - Ajuga reptans ‘Catlin’s Giant’ - Evergreen perennial from Europe - Lush rosettes of purple-tinged foliage spread by runners - 10” purple flower spikes in spring - Use as edging or as naturalized filler in sparse, shady lawns This ajuga can quickly form a dense mat of dark green leaves, even in shade, making it an excellent choice for gardens under established oak trees. The spikes of little blue-purple flowers make it especially beautiful in spring. We also like it planted around the edges of water features and artificial springs, where it appreciates the splashing and creates interesting nooks and crannies of greenery amidst the rocks. Light: Part to full shade Height: 6"-10" Width: 12"+ Hardiness Zone: 3 - [Aztec Grass/Giant Mondo](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/aztec-grass-giant-mondo/) - Ophiopogon jaburan argenteovittatus - White and green striped grass - White flowers on spikes - Blooms in summer - Great for tall borders White leaf margins make this grass-like plant (actually more closely related to lilies) a great design element in shady gardens, where it can make a brighter accent or border in dry shade. While it is fairly well adapted to central Texas, it will be prettiest if you can give it some shade throughout the day and supplemental water during droughts, but it is more than capable of surviving even in fairly harsh summers without supplemental irrigation. Light: Part to full shade Height: 2' Width: 1' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Caerulea Blue Passionvine](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/caerulea-blue-passionvine/) - Passiflora caerulea - Perennial rapid growing vine - White flower with bright blue corolla - Summer & spring bloomer - Glossy green foliage Passionflowers might be the coolest looking flowers around: they are big, showy, and otherworldly. P. caurulea is especially beautiful, with the bright blue crown highlighted against white petals. This plant prefers good drainage and deep, infrequent watering. It's also a host plant for the gulf fritillary butterfly, so an excellent choice for a butterfly garden or wildlife garden in need of food sources for caterpillars! Look out for these orange, spiky little friends a couple of times a year, and rest assured that the plant will recover cheerfully even if the caterpillars fully defoliate it. It's absolutely worth it to have a garden full of gulf fritillaries fluttering around! Light: Full sun. Tolerates shade. Height: 10'-25' Width: 3'-6' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Aristolochia Dutchman's Pipe Vine](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/aristolochia-dutchmans-pipe-vine/) - Aristolochea gigantea - A traditional garden favorite - Rapidly growing heart-leaf vine - Unusual brownish purple flower - Use for dense fence or patio coverage This tropical pipe vine can quickly cover an arbor in its large, heart-shaped leaves, and the big, weird flowers are fantastical and whimsical! Choose a protected location or use to provide quick annual cover. A note: this species is poisonous to native pipevine swallowtail caterpillars, so don't choose this variety for a butterfly garden. Instead, opt for Aristolochia fimbriata or one of the native pipevines. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 15'-30' Width: 15'-20' Hardiness Zone: 10 - [Pink Knock Out Rose](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/pink-knock-out-rose/) - Rosa x ‘Radcon’ - Semi-evergreen shrub rose - Pink single flowers look better from a distance than doubles - Blooms spring to fall - High disease resistance - Prune to 18” in Sept & May Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 3'-6' Width: 5'-6' Hardiness Zone: 4 - [Amethyst Falls Wisteria](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/amethyst-falls-wisteria/) - Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’ - Native deciduous vine from East Texas to Massachusetts - Woody, twining habit - 6-9”, drooping, fragrant, light purple flower clusters bloom in late spring This native Texas wisteria is smaller and less aggressive than other wisterias, making it an excellent choice for a smaller arbor or shaping into a tree. Wisterias bloom on new wood, so you can train it easily by pruning in winter when the plant is dormant. Then, in spring, enjoy the long sprays of beautiful purple flowers--perfect as a screen near a place where you sit, so that you can enjoy their fragrance. It's also a host plant for several species of butterflies and skippers, making it a good choice for a habitat garden. Makes a beautiful, bright accent at the border of a rose garden. Created by the same breeders that produced KnockOut roses, Drift roses are meant to be relatively easy to care for, but please be prepared to provide lots of morning sun, protection from afternoon sun in the summer, regular applications of acidic fertilizer, and good air circulation. In the summer, they will turn yellow and defoliate if they get too hot, so avoid rock mulch or decomposed granite. Instead, use a thick layer of compost and hardwood mulch to keep the roots nice and cool. Light: Full sun Height: 18" Width: 30" Hardiness Zone: 4 - [Don Juan Climbing Rose Red](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/don-juan-climbing-rose-red/) - Rosa x ‘Don Juan’ - Antique (1958) climber - FRAGRANT, true cherry red flowers contrast with nice dark foliage - The classic red climbing rose; so romantic! Introduced by Italian rose breeder Michele Malandrone in 1958, this red climbing rose is really special. Unlike many climbers, the flowers are large and on long stems suitable for cutting and bringing inside to enjoy in a vase. It's a hybrid tea rose, so it has that fabulous rose fragrance. And it's actually disease resistant, and suitable for growing in central Texas! Like all roses, be prepared to site it somewhere that gets lots of morning sun, protection from afternoon sun in the summer, drip irrigation (no sprinklers on that foliage, please), and provide regular acidic fertilizer and deadheading to keep it beautiful and productive. Looks especially magnificent against a white fence or pillar for high contrast. Light: Full sun Height: 15' Width: 3'-5' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Cinco De Mayo Rose](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/cinco-de-mayo-rose/) - Rosa floribunda ‘WEKcobeju’ - Semi-evergreen floribunda rose - Gorgeous flowers in a spectrum of rusty orange to mauve - 2009 AARS winner - Prune to 18” on Labor Day and Memorial Day This is a compact rose with beautiful, lightly fragrant flowers in a unique color: smokey lavender, rusty red, or orange when the temperatures are coldest. These gorgeous roses pair beautifully with other rose garden favorites like Mystic Spires salvia, lavender, and artemisia. Like all roses in Central Texas, be prepared to provide bright morning sun, some protection from afternoon sun in the summer, regular applications of acidic fertilizer, regular deadheading, and drip irrigation far away from the sprinkler. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 3'-4' Width: 3'-4' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Belinda's Dream Rose](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/belindas-dream-rose/) - Rosa x ‘Belinda’s Dream’ - Shrub rose with gorgeous, FRAGRANT pink flowers - Reblooms spring to fall - Aggie EarthKind™ winner! - High disease resistance; bred in TX to take the heat! This is one of our favorite roses! It's beautiful, resilient, and the flowers are massive, fully double and smell incredible; it's everything you could possibly want in a rose. Roses in Central Texas will always require some care, including regular feeding with an acidifying fertilizer, an excellent site with lots of morning sun but protection from scorching afternoon sun in the summer, drip irrigation (keep your sprinkler away!), and regular deadheading. Still, Belinda's Dream is absolutely worth it. Light: Full sun Height: 3'-6' Width: 4'-6' Hardiness Zone: 5 - [Cécile Brünner Climbing Rose](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/cecile-brunner-climbing-rose/) - Rosa x ‘Cécile Brünner Climbing’ - Antique (1894) polyantha - Sprays of small, pale pink, lightly fragrant flowers - Reblooms spring to fall - Good disease resistance - Tolerates poor soil This is an extremely vigorous heirloom rose, discovered in the United States at the end of the 19th century as a sport of the beloved small French shrub rose, 'Cécile Brünner.' Often found rambling in old cemeteries and homesites, it is extremely vigorous, relatively easy to care for, and produces beautiful, fragrant little flowers that look like perfectly miniature hybrid tea roses. It's also Paula's favorite! Like all roses in Central Texas, be prepared to provide lots of morning sun, protection from afternoon sun in the summer, drip irrigation (no sprinklers near those leaves, please!), and regular acidic fertilizer and deadheading. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 20'-30' Width: 2'-3' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Skyline Yaupon Holly](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/skyline-yaupon-holly/) - Ilex vomitoria 'WAH-SL' - Local native evergreen shrub selected for dense, narrow, upright growth habit - Uniform and well-branched - Makes an excellent screen or hedge - Male cultivar won't make berries, but does improve berry-set on your female yaupon hollies! Did you know that yaupon holly is the only source of caffeine native to North America? Multiple indigenous tribes roasted the leaves and steeped them to produce a caffeintated drink, a practice they passed on to colonists that didn't fall out of fashion until the nineteenth century. The latin name, "vomitoria," refers to the fact that some tribes used this tea for ritual purging. Today, this beautiful evergreen tree dots local wooded areas and landscapes, where the berries are an important food source for birds in late winter. Skyline is a version of this tree that has an especially dense, narrow, columnar growth habit, making it great for formal plantings and screening out your neighbors or loud, unsightly traffic. Light: Full sun to shade Height: 15'-18' Width: 2'-3' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Southern Wax Myrtle](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/southern-wax-myrtle/) - Morella cerifera - Local native evergreen shrub From Central Texas to NJ - Fast grower; prunes well - Whorls of attractive, bright yellow-green, aromatic foliage - Superb soil nitrogen fixing Another one of our favorite plants for evergreen screens. Foliage has a wonderful spicy smell when crushed. This is also a great plant for bees and wildlife, water-conscious gardens: the flowers make delicious honey, birds love the waxy berries, a number of beautiful butterflies and moths use it as a host plant, and nitrogen-fixing roots offer superb erosion control even in low, wet parts of the garden. Colonists used to boil the berries to make delightfully fragrant candles, and you can too, if you want. Light: Full sun to shade Height: 12' Width: 8'-10' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Shades of Pink Viburnum](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/shades-of-pink-viburnum/) - Viburnum tinus ‘Lisa Rosa’ - Evergreen Mediterranean shrub - Shades of Pink is compact - Red-pink buds open to white flowers in spring - Useful as a flowering part-shade hedge or specimen It can be challenging to find flowering plants for shade, but this Viburnum fits the bill while also providing a dense little evergreen hedge. Like Sandankwa, this shrub will do best in acidic soil and a spot with protection from the coldest northern winds. Light: Part shade; tolerates more shade Height: 4'-6' Width: 4'-6' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Rose Creek Abelia](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/rose-creek-abelia/) - Abelia x grandiflora ‘Rose Creek’ - Evergreen shrub from China - ‘Rose Creek’ is compact - White and pink flowers; crimson stems - Good foundation plant or low hedge. Heat tolerant. Every abelia is someone's favorite around here, and this one is Nathan's, our nursery manager. "It's just a great solid little green shrub," he says. Like the bigger Glossy abelia, it looks great as a formal hedge or as a soft speciment plant. It can take full beating sun and still looks great in part shade. The only thing that can take it down is bad drainage. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 2'-3' Width: 3'-4' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Sandankwa Viburnum](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/sandankwa-viburnum/) - Viburnum suspensum - Evergreen shrub from southern Japan - Glossy, leathery oval leaves - White flowers in spring - Prefers acidic soil - Used as a hedge or privacy screen Native to southwestern Japan, this is a lovely deer resistant screening plant for a shaded area with moist soil and some protection from the elements. White flowers are beautiful, but fly pollinated, so they have a very distinctive smell that you'll either love or hate! Still, this is a beautiful little dense evergreen shrub to create a protected little green cove, and can tolerate heavy clay. Light: Part shade Height: 6'-12' Width: 6'-12' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Pride of Houston Yaupon Holly](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/pride-of-houston-yaupon-holly/) - Ilex vomitoria ‘Pride of Houston’ - Local native evergreen shrub from Central Texas to Virginia - A female cultivar selected for outstanding red berry production! - Uniform, well-branched habit - Use as a hedge or accent plant Did you know that yaupon holly is the only source of caffeine native to North America? Multiple indigenous tribes roasted the leaves and steeped them to produce a caffeintated drink, a practice they passed on to colonists that didn't fall out of fashion until the nineteenth century. The latin name, "vomitoria," refers to the fact that some tribes used this tea for ritual purging. Today, this beautiful evergreen tree dots local wooded areas and landscapes, where the berries are an important food source for birds in late winter. Just as great in the landscape as an ornamental small tree or a screening hedge, Pride of Houston produces more berries than any other yaupon holly cultivar. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 15' Width: 8' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Radiance Abelia](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/radiance-abelia/) - Abelia x grandiflora ‘Radiance’ - Evergreen shrub from China - ‘Radiance’ is short and features two-tone leaves that do not turn orange in fall - The best Abelia for small areas - Good accent plant; heat tolerant Every abelia is someone's favorite around here, and this one is Ashley's. She loves the compact size and the cool variegation that is consistent year-round, and the fact that it makes the perfect replacement for Sunshine privet (a plant that we don't sell because privets are invasive, and we think there are much cooler plants, including this one). Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 2'-3' Width: 4'-5' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Micron Dwarf Yaupon Holly](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/micron-dwarf-yaupon-holly/) - Ilex vomitoria ‘Gremicr’ - Local native evergreen shrub - Very small, dark green leaves - Top performer for very low hedges or small mounds - Looks good massed or in pairs - Perfect for any style of garden Did you know that yaupon holly is the only source of caffeine native to North America? Multiple indigenous tribes roasted the leaves and steeped them to produce a caffeintated drink, a practice they passed on to colonists that didn't fall out of fashion until the nineteenth century. The latin name, "vomitoria," refers to the fact that some tribes used this tea for ritual purging. Today, this beautiful evergreen tree dots local wooded areas and landscapes, where the berries are an important food source for birds in late winter. Micron is a tiny dwarf version of this tree that stays an adorable little mounded shrub in the landscape, not more than 2' tall. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 1'-2' Width: 2'-3' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Glossy Abelia](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/glossy-abelia/) - Abelia x grandiflora - Evergreen, flowering shrub - Delicate white-pink flowers - Blooms summer to fall - Great for low hedges or foundation plantings. This is the largest abelia cultivar, and makes a great screen or hedge. Fast, densely growing foliage means it looks nice, full, and dark green shortly after you cut it back or shape it. Add in the flowers, and this is one of the prettiest evergreen hedges you can grow in Central Texas. Or grow it like Meghan's mom as a big, beautiful, arcing specimen plant in front of a window (so you don't have to look at your neighbor's AC unit). Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 6' Width: 6' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Kaleidoscope Abelia](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/kaleidoscope-abelia/) - Abelia x grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope' - Evergreen shrub from China - Fast growing, arching branches - ‘Kaleidoscope’ features variegated leaves that tint orange in fall - White to pale pink flowers - Good for unpruned hedges Every abelia is someone's favorite on our nursery and landscaping teams, and this one is Zaine's. He loves the way the colors change on it in the fall, as well as its neat, tidy little size and shape and the way it bounces back quickly after cold snaps. The flower sheathes (called calyces) are high contrast and pop beautifully against the variegated foliage and white flowers. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 24"-36" Width: 30"-40" Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Dwarf Yaupon Holly](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/dwarf-yaupon-holly/) - Ilex vomitoria 'Nana' - Local native evergreen shrub - Small, glossy green leaves - Top performer for low hedges or medium mounds - Looks good massed or in pairs - Perfect for any style of garden Did you know that yaupon holly is the only source of caffeine native to North America? Multiple indigenous tribes roasted the leaves and steeped them to produce a caffeintated drink, a practice they passed on to colonists that didn't fall out of fashion until the nineteenth century. The latin name, "vomitoria," refers to the fact that some tribes used this tea for ritual purging. Today, this beautiful evergreen tree dots local wooded areas and landscapes, where the berries are an important food source for birds in late winter. Dwarf yaupon "Nana" is a great, tidy little shrub that makes an excellent replacement for boxwoods in sunny, hot locations. Because it is a male cultivar, it will not produce berries. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 4' Width: 3'-4' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Ellen Huff Oakleaf Hydrangea](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/ellen-huff-oakleaf-hydrangea/) - Hydrangea quercifolia 'Ellen Huff' - Lovely shrub with white flower clusters that age to soft pink. - Brilliant burgundy red fall foliage - Ornamental deep cinnamon bark. - An outstanding accent specimen. Native to east Texas all the way to the coast of the southeastern US, this is a gorgeous accent shrub to add soft texture and structure to a shaded woodland garden, as well as interest for every season--white flowers in spring, big soft green leaves in summer, red foliage in fall, and exfoliating cinnamon colored bark in winter. Unlike other hydrangeas, oakleaf hydrangea is reasonably well-adapted to our alkaline soil. Still, keep in mind that in nature, this species grows in low, moist woodlands and on riverbanks, so make sure to provide lots of organic matter, compost, and irrigate during droughts. Ellen Huff is one of the biggest varieties, so give her lots of space. Blooms on old wood, so prune immediately after flowering if you'd like a tidier shape. Light: Part sun Height: 8' Width: 6' Hardiness Zone: 5 - [Cherry Blast Loropetalum](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/cherry-blast-loropetalum/) - Loropetalum chinensis 'Cherry Blast' - Evergreen shrub from China - ‘Cherry Blast’ features very dark foliage and deep red, fringed flowers in spring - Provides contrast and color - Prefers rich, acidic soil Loropetalum is a customer favorite because that dark purple foliage is just so striking in the landscape, adding quick, consistent color and interest to the garden. The spidery-looking flowers are also beautiful, and this cultivar's flowers are an especially dark, deep red. This plant can be a little bit needy in central Texas because it prefers rich, acidic, well-draining soil and some afternoon shade, but it's pretty enough to be worth the trouble. Light: Part shade. Tolerates sun. Height: 6' Width: 6' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Desperado Texas Sage](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/desperado-texas-sage/) - Leucophyllum frutescens ‘Greado’ - Local native evergreen shrub from hillsides in Central Texas to Mexico - Medium mauve 1” flowers burst into bloom before rain comes - Tough as nails in hot, dry, rocky, alkaline soil If you need shrubs or hedges in a truly punishingly sunny and dry location, consider Texas sage. Tiny white hairs densely cover the leaves, making the foliage a beautiful silvery color and protecting the plant from bright sun and searing reflective heat. According to local lore, these bushes act like barometers, covering themselves in a flush of purple blooms just before it rains. We find their accuracy uncanny! This cultivated variety (cultivar for short) has very silver foliage and lavender-pinkish blooms. Light: Full sun Height: 6' Width: 4'-6' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Centre Court Cherry Laurel](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/centre-court-cherry-laurel/) - Prunus caroliniana 'Grecct' - Native evergreen shrub from thickets from East Texas to NC - Glossy, dark green leaves - Spires of white flowers in spring - Excellent windbreak or lightly pruned hedge This small, evergreen, densely foliaged tree is ideal for those who need a taller evergreen screen quickly, such as to block the view of (or from) a neighbor's two-story house. It's also great for pollinators, great for birds, and not prone to the same disease issues as Red-Tip Photinia, the non-native plant most commonly used for this purpose in the 1980s and '90s. We have them planted by the Pro Shop, if you'd like to see their dense evergreen foliage and tidy conical shape in action! Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 30' Width: 15' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Bright N Tight Cherry Laurel](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/bright-n-tight-cherry-laurel/) - Prunus caroliniana 'Monus' - Native evergreen shrub from thickets from East Texas to North Carolina - Glossy, dark green leaves - Excellent windbreak or lightly pruned hedge The perfect plant for not having to look at your neighbor in a hurry, Bright N Tight Cherry Laurels are our bestselling privacy shrub. They grow quickly once established, and unlike the Red-Tip Photinia, Ligustrums, and Privets we do not sell on principle, they are native, good for wildlife, and will not contract an ugly fungal disease and decline over a period of years. This dwarf cultivar is also the perfect size without requiring maintenance or trimming to keep it from turning into a large tree. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 8'-10' Width: 6'-8' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Canyon Creek Abelia](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/canyon-creek-abelia/) - Abelia x 'Canyon Creek' - Evergreen shrub from China - Fast growing, arching branches - Copper-tinged yellow turn green then leaves turn bronze in fall - Flowers late spring to frost - Good for unpruned, soft hedges Every abelia is someone's favorite! This one is Alan's and Richard's. They love the coppery color of the new foliage, which makes a high contrast against other garden plants and looks especially great with loropetalum. This one makes a beautiful soft, unpruned specimen plant, but looks especially cool right after it's shaped and pushes out all that pretty, orange-red new growth. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 3'-5' Width: 5'-6' Hardiness Zone: 6 - [Yellow Bells Esperanza](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/yellow-bells-esperanza/) - Tecoma stans - Bright tubular yellow flowers all summer long - Perennial comes back from the roots in mid-spring - Customer and pollinator favorite! Native to the Southwestern US (including Texas!), this tropical looking flower takes heat and drought like a champion. Like Pride of Barbados, it comes up late in the spring and keeps your garden showy and beautiful during the worst parts of summer, and is carefree once it's established (just make sure you give it extra protection for its first winter). Pollinators love the giant, yellow tubular flowers, and so do we! Also a host plant for some very cool varieties of sphinx moth, and the very cute dogface butterfly. Light: Full sun. Tolerates shade. Height: 3' - 6' Width: 3' - 4' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Baby Gem Boxwood](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/baby-gem-boxwood/) - Buxus microphylla var. japonica 'Gregem' - Evergreen shrub from Japan - Baby Gem™ is the best boxwood for Central Texas! - Slow, tidy grower for clipped hedges or rounds - Prefers evenly watered soil Boxwoods are a classic choice for a fomal hedge, and Baby Gem is the perfect size for this purpose. It also copes better with Central Texas's unique conditions than other boxwoods. Light: Part shade Height: 4' Width: 4'-5' Hardiness Zone: 5 - [Pink Skullcap](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/pink-skullcap-2/) - Scutellaria suffrutescens - Evergreen subshrub from Mexico - Tidy, compact mounding habit - Hot pink flowers late spring to fall - Loves hot, sunny locations - Prune lightly in early spring - Attractive edging or groundcover It's a tiny pink shrub with super cute pink flowers that attract hummingbirds, which are also very cute. What's not to love? The soft texture goes well with other xeric plants like blackfoot daisy, all of the salvias, yarrow, Texas sage, and more. It also looks great spilling over rocks. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 10" Width: 18" Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Black & Blue Salvia](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/black-blue-salvia/) - Salvia guaranitica 'Black & Blue' - Stunning blue flowers on black stems bloom spring to fall - Heat and drought tolerant - Tough colorful perennial - Textured deep green foliage Native to South America, this salvia has dark blue flowers with black calyces, making a striking effect in pots and mixed with lighter colored flowers. The flowers are also quite big, making it a favorite with pollinators. This plant is happiest with afternoon shade--those big, soft, dark green leaves can burn in the summer if they aren't protected. Still, this is a beautiful, showy plant for a shady garden! Light: Part shade Height: 2' - 5' Width: 2' - 5' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Texas Rock Rose](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/texas-rock-rose/) - Pavonia lasiopetala - Local native deciduous subshrub from Central Texas to Mexico - Gorgeous, deep pink 1.5” flowers from spring to fall - Bright color for part shade! - Prune in winter and also to shape Another versatile, native member of the hibiscus family for your garden! Provided that you have good drainage, this small shrub performs well in full sun or in sun for half the day, and is an excellent choice for those difficult west facing shade gardens where the only available sunshine is scorching. It also blooms for most of the year, making it an excellent choice for butterfly and pollinator gardens: in early spring and late summer, when nothing else is there for your pollinators, Texas Rock Rose has your back. It has a sprawling, informal look if left unpruned, and the soft, fuzzy little leaves add welcome texture to the garden! Light: Full sun to dappled shade Height: 2' - 3' Width: 3' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Imperial Blue Plumbago](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/imperial-blue-plumbago/) - Plumbago auriculata ‘Imperial Blue’ - Evergreen shrub from South Africa - ‘Imperial Blue’ is more compact - Luminous, sky blue flowers bloom continuously from spring to fall - Heat tolerant; prefers acidic soil - A customer favorite! True blue flowers are beautiful in the garden, but boy is it difficult to find an actually blue flower. That's why people love plumbago: it's one of the few true blue flowers! It also sticks to you and your dogs, which can be fun! Make sure to get it in the ground before October and provide extra mulch and water for the first winter, but it's pretty carefree once established. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 3' - 4' Width: 3' - 4' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Big Momma Turk’s Cap](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/big-momma-turks-cap/) - Malvaviscus x 'Big Momma' - Profusion of red flowers two to three times bigger than the species; hummingbirds love it! - Blooms mid-summer to early fall - Great for poor soil and shady areas Selected by Texas plantsman Greg Grant, this hybrid of our hardy little native species with the bigger flowers of Mexican Malvaviscus arboreus has the best of both worlds: good frost tolerance and big flowers. Grant liked it so much he named it after his great grandmother and used this plant as a parent for his other cultivars, including Pam's Pink! This native hibiscus relative looks beautiful in any amount of light, any kind of soil, any amount of drought, and even tolerates seasonal flooding and poor drainage. Hummingbirds especially love the giant red flowers, and you can even eat the little fruits, which taste like tiny apples (earning the plant one of its many common names, Manzanita or Mexican Apple). Bonus fun fact: Grant was our nursery manager Nathan's mentor, and he's seen the original Big Momma Turk's Cap in real life! Light: Full sun to full shade Height: 5' - 8' Width: 5' - 8' Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Blackfoot Daisy](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/blackfoot-daisy/) - Melampodium leucanthum - Local native evergreen perennial from Colorado to Mexico - Covered with white flowers for nine months every year nonstop! - All-time customer favorite! - The floweriest plant for hot, dry, well-drained areas This is one tough plant! In the wild, you'll find blackfoot daisy clinging to rocky slopes made of limestone and caliche, blooming cheerfully all summer without a drop of extra irrigation thanks to small, sandpapery leaves and deep, woody root systems. In the garden, the tiny white flowers and evergreen foliage will brighten up hot spots with reflective heat from rocks or sidewalks without complaint. Rich soil and extra water may promote more flowers in the short term, but can shorten this perennial's life, so be sure to give it good drainage and resist the urge to fertilize. Blackfoot daisy also looks great as a perennial anchor in wildflower plantings, flowering and holding soil down after your bluebonnets and blanketflowers call it quits when the summer heats up. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 1' Width: 2' - 3' Hardiness Zone: 5 - [Silver Pony Foot](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/silver-pony-foot/) - Dichondra argentea - Native semi-evergreen perennial from W. Texas to AZ & Mexico - Striking, shiny silver foliage - A lush groundcover for well- drained soil - Cascades from containers too! Eye-catching silvery color and cute little leaves that really are reminiscent of pony's feet. This cute groundcover looks great spilling from a container, but also controls erosion and makes an excellent grass replacement that you'll never have to mow (and is especially handsome when paired with frogfruit). These little feet do tend to wander, so either rein it in with full sun and drier conditions or plant it somewhere that you don't mind its tendency to spread. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 2' Width: 2' - 3' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Gregg's Blue Mistflower](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/greggs-blue-mistflower/) - Conoclinium greggii - Native deciduous perennial from South Texas to Arizona & Mexico - Puffy periwinkle flowers from May to October, heaviest in fall - Fresh-looking bright green leaves - Butterfly MAGNET!! They love it! Native to West Texas, this plant loves full sun and tolerates seasonal flooding if it has good drainage. It also looks positively magical as soon as it starts blooming in late spring: misty clusters of light purple flowers and a rabble of butterflies and native bees make it a perfect addition to a butterfly garden or any part of your landscape that you just like to sit and look at. Use this plant as a groundcover or natural looking border, and be sure to give it some water in the hottest parts of summer to keep it blooming. Male Queen and Monarch butterflies use the nectar from this plant as a gift when they mate, as it contains a compound that makes the resulting eggs taste bad to predators! Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 12" - 18" Width: 12" - 24" Hardiness Zone: 7 - [Foxtail Fern](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/foxtail-fern/) - Asparagus densiflorus ‘Myers’ - Evergreen perennial from southern Africa - Dense, bright green cones of tiny leaves - Great texture for containers or seasonal beds This plant--actually more closely related to edible asparagus and not a fern at all (but please don't try to eat it)--is the cutest little accent in container arrangements! It's also extremely drought tolerant, which can be very helpful for container plantings and beds with dry shade (like those found under live oak trees). Great as a houseplant, too! Light: Full sun to dappled shade Height: 2' Width: 3' - 4' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Pride of Barbados](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/pride-of-barbados/) - Caesalpinia pulcherrima - Deciduous shrub from the Caribbean - Crinkled bright orange & red flowers - Blooms all summer when it’s HOT! - Loves Texas sun and heat - Dies back in frost but re-grows every April! Yeah! This plant is ubiquitous in full sun plantings in Central Texas, and with good reason: once established, it takes full sun and punishing drought like a champion, no additional irrigation required. It's also stunningly gorgeous, with sprays of big orange and red flowers that will attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden. It's also a legume, so it will also improve your soil below ground while looking beautiful above. The only drawback is that this awesome plant's native range is further south than Central Texas, so it dies all the way to the ground in the winter. We recommend getting your plants in the ground before October and mulching them heavily the first winter; after that, it's a big, carefree, reliable friend for any xeric pollinator garden. Light: Full sun to part shade Height: 8' - 10' Width: 8' - 12' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Native Milkweed](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/native-milkweed/) - Asclepias tuberosa - Local native deciduous perennial found in prairies throughout North America - One of eight locally native milkweed species - Bright orange flowers from May to September - Larval host for Monarch and Queen butterflies Save the monarchs. Save the world. Plants in the asclepias genus don't just sustain migrating monarchs as they pass through Central Texas in the spring: they also provide critical nectar and pollen for bumblebees and other native pollinators, attract beneficial insects, and sustain over twenty species of moth and butterfly caterpillar in addition to the charismatic Monarch we all know and love. Also called pleurisy root, Asclepias tuberosa has distinctive bright orange flowers, clear latex sap (instead of "milky" sap like other milkweeds), and a long history of medicinal uses by indigenous Americans in its native range. Plant native milkweeds like this one in order to avoid interfering with the monarch migration and contributing to OE, the parasitic disease epidemic that is currently harming migrating monarch populations in North America. This cultivar has lavender purple blooms, is a little bit bigger than Desperado, and may bloom even more heavily. Light: Full to part sun Height: 6'-7' Width: 4'-6' Hardiness Zone: 8 - [Mystic Spires Salvia](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/mystic-spires-salvia/) - Salvia longispicata x farinacea ‘Balsamisp’ - Deciduous perennial from Mexico - Tall spires of indigo flowers bloom repeatedly from spring to fall when deadheaded - Tolerates heat and humidity - Mixes well with other flowers We love this salvia! If you've walked by our butterfly garden and noticed a plant with big, soft looking leaves and gigantic dark blue flower spikes covered in big fat bumblebees, this was it. A hybrid between our native mealy blue sage and a perennial sage native to southwestern Mexico, this plant is super showy but still surprisingly heat and drought tolerant. A must-have for butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, and cut flower gardens. Good companions include Pride of Barbados, Yellow Bells, firebush, native hesperaloes, or anything that's about midsize and bright yellow or orange. Obviously, we love Texas Mountain Laurel for its evergreen foliage, tough physiology, and abundant clusters of purple flowers redolent of grape soda in spring. But this plant also enjoys a rich cultural history prior to colonization, both in Texas and among indigenous groups outside of the Mountain Laurel's native range. The beautiful red beans have been found in archaological sites dating back to the 8000s BCE. By the time we have records after colonization, we know that many tribes used the beautiful little red beans for jewelry, decoration, beadwork, and in ritual ceremonies tied to intoxication and visions. Today, your children may use the little red beans to play the hot beans game, rubbing the beans on the sidewalk to activate its many toxic compounds and then sticking them on their friends' arms to burn them. Ah, childhood. Spend time with our in-house nursery specialists building a terrarium! Our specialists will help you understand how to properly layer soil substrate, design, plant, and plan maintenance routines based on the plants you selected. A small glass vessel is provided with the purchase of a workshop entry. We encourage you to bring your own terrarium (any clear glass or plastic vessel) for a personal touch. Suggestions for picking your own terrarium vessel: If you plan to grow carnivorous plants or moss we suggest having a closed to semi-closed terrarium to properly maintain humidity. Completely closed terrariums will need to be opened at least once a week. Semi-closed may require compensational misting. We do not recommend completely open terrariums for carnivorous plants. Terrariums with a narrow opening are not recommended for this class. They can be difficult to plant for beginners. Try to pick something large enough to move your hands in. Here is a list of common glass that can be used as a terrarium: Cleaned jam or pickle jars Wide flower vases Old goldfish aquariums Stemless wine glasses Clear cookie jars Goodwill typically has a great selection of affordable glassware. *Cancelations 48 hours before the class can be refunded by calling 512-260-5050. because this is an internet transaction, please allow 48 hours to see your refund. - [Cool-Season Annual Combo Container Workshop](https://hillcountrywatergardens.com/product/cool-season-annual-combo-container-workshop/) - Class Postponed Event Details: Date: Saturday, December 9th Time: 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Cost: $25 for a small arrangement, $35 for Medium, $55 for Large Location: Hill Country Water Gardens & Nursery Class includes all necessary supplies.
