Ilex vomitoria ‘WAH-SL’

– Local native evergreen shrub selected for dense, narrow, upright growth habit
– Uniform and well-branched
– Makes an excellent screen or hedge
– Male cultivar won’t make berries, but does improve berry-set on your female yaupon hollies!

Did you know that yaupon holly is the only source of caffeine native to North America? Multiple indigenous tribes roasted the leaves and steeped them to produce a caffeintated drink, a practice they passed on to colonists that didn’t fall out of fashion until the nineteenth century. The latin name, “vomitoria,” refers to the fact that some tribes used this tea for ritual purging. Today, this beautiful evergreen tree dots local wooded areas and landscapes, where the berries are an important food source for birds in late winter. Skyline is a version of this tree that has an especially dense, narrow, columnar growth habit, making it great for formal plantings and screening out your neighbors or loud, unsightly traffic.
