1. Add Native Plants:
Fireflies have evolved to prefer native plants, which provide them with food and shelter.
2. Add a Water Source:
Fireflies need moisture to survive, so adding a water feature like a birdbath, fountain, or a pond (even a small pond/water garden) can attract them.
3. Leaf Litter:
Leaving leaves and logs in designated areas creates a perfect habitat for firefly larvae to develop. This step is very important!
4. (Pease!) Reduce Light Pollution!:
Fireflies are attracted to darkness, so turning off unnecessary lights at night will encourage them to visit your yard.
5. Avoid Pesticides:
Pesticides can harm fireflies at all stages of their life cycle, so using organic gardening methods (not organic pesticides) is highly recommended.
6. Naturalistic Yard Care:
Allow for areas with tall grasses and shrubs to provide cover for fireflies during the day. This doesn't mean you have to have a wild, untamed, crazy-overgrown landscape. We need to garden to mimic prairies and woodlands.
Keeping these principles in mind and practice usually will not attract Fireflies overnight. Keep the course, and they will find you! Good things come to those who wait!
