We did it! After years of trial and error, failure We did it! After years of trial and error, failure after failure, our team developed the first winter-hardy Jalapeño tree! Using our primitive DIY CRISPR lab we were able to splice the DNA of Cercis candadensis (cultivar in photo: ‘Forest Pansy’) and the beloved Jalapeño! Our overall goal was to reengineer the often unsightly seed pods of the Redbud with something Texans might like better! Jalapeños! We grated the modified DNA into several buds 2 years ago and this single branch produced peppers this spring! Other bud grafts were unsuccessful however we now have proven bud wood to begin producing, what we hope to be, entire redbud trees that will produce peppers!
