We did it! After years of trial and error, failure

We did it! After years of trial and error, failure after failure, our team developed the first winter-hardy Jalapeño tree!

Using our primitive DIY CRISPR lab we were able to splice the DNA of Cercis candadensis (cultivar in photo: ‘Forest Pansy’) and the beloved Jalapeño! Our overall goal was to reengineer the often unsightly seed pods of the Redbud with something Texans might like better! Jalapeños!

We grated the modified DNA into several buds 2 years ago and this single branch produced peppers this spring!

Other bud grafts were unsuccessful however we now have proven bud wood to begin producing, what we hope to be, entire redbud trees that will produce peppers!

Climbing ‘Don Juan’ Rose in our garden.

Almost 20 years ago I admired this rose in a private garden I maintained. At the time I had 4 jobs, 2 private gardens, the @sfagardens, and I worked weekends at a small startup nursery called Naconiche Gardens in Nacogdoches. I had 4 jobs because I was panicking when I learned my first son was on the way! Almost 20 years later my son sent me photos of this rose blooming here at HCWG. I only have 1 job now (technically) and two sons and I still admire this rose every year!

This rose always sells out quickly! After a crazy busy weekend, I have no idea if we still have any. If not, we’ll do our best to bring in more!
