This is one tough plant! In the wild, you’ll find blackfoot daisy clinging to rocky slopes made of limestone and caliche, blooming cheerfully all summer without a drop of extra irrigation thanks to small, sandpapery leaves and deep, woody root systems. In the garden, the tiny white flowers and evergreen foliage will brighten up hot spots with reflective heat from rocks or sidewalks without complaint. Rich soil and extra water may promote more flowers in the short term, but can shorten this perennial’s life, so be sure to give it good drainage and resist the urge to fertilize. Blackfoot daisy also looks great as a perennial anchor in wildflower plantings, flowering and holding soil down after your bluebonnets and blanketflowers call it quits when the summer heats up.
