– Deciduous perennial
– Popular and reliable clematis
– Perfect for fences and small arbors
– Showy deep purple blooms all summer
A hybrid heirloom clematis introduced in England in the 1800s, this vine is an old garden favorite. Clematis vines can be notoriously difficult to site, but the incredible show of large deep purple flowers are worth learning about what you have and what it needs! Since this hybrid clematis blooms on both old and new growth, you can choose to either prune lightly to shape right after blooming, or simply cut vines to the ground in fall or spring. All clematis vines like to have their flowering vines in some sun (morning sun preferred), and moist shade around their roots (best achieved by companion planting with shrubs and perennials to keep the ground cool and moist).
