Did you know that yaupon holly is the only source of caffeine native to North America? Multiple indigenous tribes roasted the leaves and steeped them to produce a caffeintated drink, a practice they passed on to colonists that didn’t fall out of fashion until the nineteenth century. The latin name, “vomitoria,” refers to the fact that some tribes used this tea for ritual purging. Today, this beautiful evergreen tree dots local wooded areas and landscapes, where the berries are an important food source for birds in late winter. Dwarf yaupon “Nana” is a great, tidy little shrub that makes an excellent replacement for boxwoods in sunny, hot locations. Because it is a male cultivar, it will not produce berries.
