Native to east Texas all the way to the coast of the southeastern US, this is a gorgeous accent shrub to add soft texture and structure to a shaded woodland garden, as well as interest for every season–white flowers in spring, big soft green leaves in summer, red foliage in fall, and exfoliating cinnamon colored bark in winter. Unlike other hydrangeas, oakleaf hydrangea is reasonably well-adapted to our alkaline soil. Still, keep in mind that in nature, this species grows in low, moist woodlands and on riverbanks, so make sure to provide lots of organic matter, compost, and irrigate during droughts. Ellen Huff is one of the biggest varieties, so give her lots of space. Blooms on old wood, so prune immediately after flowering if you’d like a tidier shape.
