April! Yeah!

This plant is ubiquitous in full sun plantings in Central Texas, and with good reason: once established, it takes full sun and punishing drought like a champion, no additional irrigation required. It’s also stunningly gorgeous, with sprays of big orange and red flowers that will attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden. It’s also a legume, so it will also improve your soil below ground while looking beautiful above. The only drawback is that this awesome plant’s native range is further south than Central Texas, so it dies all the way to the ground in the winter. We recommend getting your plants in the ground before October and mulching them heavily the first winter; after that, it’s a big, carefree, reliable friend for any xeric pollinator garden.
