Did you know that yaupon holly is the only source of caffeine native to North America? Multiple indigenous tribes roasted the leaves and steeped them to produce a caffeintated drink, a practice they passed on to colonists that didn’t fall out of fashion until the nineteenth century. The latin name, “vomitoria,” refers to the fact that some tribes used this tea for ritual purging. Today, this beautiful evergreen tree dots local wooded areas and landscapes, where the berries are an important food source for birds in late winter. Just as great in the landscape as an ornamental small tree or a screening hedge, Pride of Houston produces more berries than any other yaupon holly cultivar.
