– Local native evergreen shrub
From Central Texas to NJ
– Fast grower; prunes well
– Whorls of attractive, bright
yellow-green, aromatic foliage
– Superb soil nitrogen fixing
Another one of our favorite plants for evergreen screens. Foliage has a wonderful spicy smell when crushed. This is also a great plant for bees and wildlife, water-conscious gardens: the flowers make delicious honey, birds love the waxy berries, a number of beautiful butterflies and moths use it as a host plant, and nitrogen-fixing roots offer superb erosion control even in low, wet parts of the garden. Colonists used to boil the berries to make delightfully fragrant candles, and you can too, if you want.
