– Local native deciduous tree
from Central Texas to OK
– Bright purplish pink flowers
cover bare branches in spring
– Glossy, heart-shaped green
leaves turn yellow in fall
What a beautiful signifier that spring is here! This ornamental native tree has a very nice branch structure that stands on its own throughout the winter months, but it truly shines right at the beginning of spring. Clusters of fuchsia blooms adorn the bare branches right at the start of spring to let us know that it’s time to get back in the garden! Its glossy, dark green, heart-shaped leaves arrive shortly after the blooms are finished. They will then turn a (very underrated in my opinion) nice golden yellow before they drop in the fall. Find a nice little spot in your yard for this beauty!
