This is a common supermarket apple, sure. But apple growing connoseiurs agree: a home grown Gala apple, ripened on the tree and picked and eaten fresh, is an entirely different creature: far more flavorful, with aromatic qualities similar to a pear. Gala is a relatively low-chill apple that does really well in Central Texas, and will usually ripen in late summer, after Fuji. We have one planted in our food forest, and we can’t wait to try it. 500-600 chill hours.
