– Antique (1958) climber
– FRAGRANT, true cherry
red flowers contrast
with nice dark foliage
– The classic red climbing
rose; so romantic!
Introduced by Italian rose breeder Michele Malandrone in 1958, this red climbing rose is really special. Unlike many climbers, the flowers are large and on long stems suitable for cutting and bringing inside to enjoy in a vase. It’s a hybrid tea rose, so it has that fabulous rose fragrance. And it’s actually disease resistant, and suitable for growing in central Texas! Like all roses, be prepared to site it somewhere that gets lots of morning sun, protection from afternoon sun in the summer, drip irrigation (no sprinklers on that foliage, please), and provide regular acidic fertilizer and deadheading to keep it beautiful and productive. Looks especially magnificent against a white fence or pillar for high contrast.
