Watering Wisely for a Healthy Garden

Spring has sprung! As temperatures rise and plants emerge from winter slumber, it’s time to turn our attention to efficient watering practices. Here are some key strategies to ensure your garden thrives throughout the summer months:

  • Mulch [A]: After the soil warms, apply 2-4 inches of natural mulch (wood chips, bark, etc.) around trees, shrubs, vegetables, and flower beds. Mulch acts as a natural sponge, retaining moisture in the soil and keeping it cooler during hot spells. This reduces water needs and helps maintain a healthy plant, even during water restrictions.

  • Feed for Strength [B]: Fertilize your plants with a combination of granular and liquid fertilizers to prepare them for the potential stresses of summer. Well-nourished plants are better equipped to handle heat, drought, and other environmental challenges.

  • Boost Your Soil [C]: Amending your soil with organic matter like compost does double duty. It feeds the soil microbes that improve its overall health and structure, and it also acts like a sponge, soaking up and slowly releasing moisture to your plants. Our Nature’s Creation compost goes a step further: it contains mycorrhizal fungi, a beneficial fungus that forms a symbiotic relationship with plant roots, increasing their reach for water and nutrients from the surrounding soil.

  • Water Wisely [D]: Avoid wasting water by watering directly at the base of plants, not on pavements or sidewalks. Early morning watering is best to minimize evaporation caused by wind and heat. Morning watering can also prevent plant pathogens from getting an upper hand on a wet leaf. Ideally, use a drip irrigation system set on a low flow for a longer duration. This allows water to penetrate deep into the clay soil, encouraging a healthy root system that can better withstand dry periods.

By following these tips, you can create a water-wise garden that thrives throughout the summer, promoting a healthy ecosystem and saving you time and money on water bills. Let’s celebrate spring by nurturing our gardens and contributing to a greener planet!
