Saving Gardens From Deer- From Losing Battle to Effortless Victory.
Written by our friend Jef at ohDEER
Many of our local gardeners face a familiar challenge: we love our carefully curated landscapes and flower beds, and the deer love them too. For many of our customers, especially those planting roses, tender perennials, and new spring planting additions to their beds, browsing damage can feel relentless. Off-the-shelf repellent products often promise a quick fix but rarely deliver lasting results. That’s where ohDEER of Northwest Austin comes in. Locally owned by gardener, outdoor enthusiast, and HCWG friend and co-worker, Jef Fair, ohDEER focuses on reliably protecting susceptible plants so you can actually enjoy the garden you’ve invested in.
ohDEER’s approach starts with a food-grade blend of all-natural ingredients that deer find strongly unpleasant, both in smell and taste. The main components—egg solids, white pepper, garlic, and peppermint oil—are well known in deer control for mimicking the foul or strong fragrances found in plants deer naturally avoid. Instead of a light misting applied from an off-the-shelf bottle, ohDEER thoroughly saturates the foliage with several gallons of solution until plants are wet enough to drip. In heavily browsed yards, or in beds with emerging vegetation like our beloved spring bulbs, ohDEER will also apply a granular product around the perimeter of planting beds. This creates a dual barrier: a scent signal that warns deer away, and a bad taste if they do decide to take a test nibble, which helps break their habit of feeding in that space. The goal is to get deer to feed elsewhere. And there’s an additional benefit to ohDEER’s treatments– they also work to prevent damage from rabbit feeding as well!
Just as HCWG emphasizes building healthy soil through amendments and choosing adapted plants for Central Texas conditions, ohDEER focuses on safety and long-term landscape health. Their product is made from all-natural essential oils and other inert ingredients and falls under the EPA’s FIFRA 25(b) “minimum risk” classification, meaning it poses little to no risk to people, pets, or the environment. That translates into no harsh chemicals, no need to evacuate during or after treatments, and no special precautions for kids or pets in the yard. Although their product has no “aquatic offset”, sensitive koi ponds are handled with extra care, with technicians avoiding direct spray onto the water while still protecting nearby plants.
Effectiveness depends on consistency, much like any other garden routine—watering, pruning, or fertilizing. ohDEER typically works on a three-week treatment cycle to keep the repellent at an effective level on the plants deer love most. Ultimately, ohDEER’s goal is to change the deer's feeding behavior rather than fence them out entirely. ohDEER teaches deer that your yard is no longer an easy, tasty buffet, encouraging them to browse elsewhere.
